Latest Town Deal plans to help boost Cleator Moor to go on show

EXCITING plans designed to help Cleator Moor and its communities to thrive for generations will be on show at a special drop-in event next week.

Anyone can attend the sessions to see the latest plans on Cleator Moor Town Deal and each of its four ambitious projects designed to transform the health, wealth and opportunities of the area.

The informal event will take place on Tuesday, June 27 at Cleator Moor Civic Hall, The Square, between 3pm and 7.30pm.

Members of the project teams will be on hand to discuss the proposals and answer any questions people have.

Bob Metcalfe, Chair of the Cleator Moor Town Deal Board, urged people to go along to see how the projects have progressed.

“Work has been ongoing behind the scenes to further develop each of these four schemes,” he said.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming people to the event so that they can see for themselves the latest designs and chat to those involved in getting them to this crucial stage.”

Working with Copeland Borough Council, the Cleator Moor Town Deal Board secured £40.9m in funding in November last year – with £22.5m coming from the Government’s Towns Fund and a further £18.4m from match funders.

Now, alongside the newly formed Cumberland Council, work is underway to ready each of the projects for completion before March 2026.

The four projects that make up the Cleator Moor Town deal are:

Enterprising Town – The creation of an Enterprise Hub at Leconfield Industrial Estate to provide employment and training opportunities for residents in Cleator Moor as well as helping to diversify the local economy. The wider estate would see existing buildings being refurbished, landscaping and improved biodiversity.

Healthy Town – This project will create a modern, multi-purpose and inclusive activity centre to help people of all ages and abilities to access sport and exercise to improve their health and wellbeing. People will be encouraged to visit Cleator Moor, boosting the local economy.

Connected Town – Making better connections between residential areas, commercial zones and the town centre are at the heart of this plan, including ways to make walking and cycling safer and more accessible for everyone.

Revitalised Town – This project aims to provide modern work spaces within underutilised town centre buildings and to improve perceptions of Cleator Moor overall to enhance skills and employment opportunities for local people.

Leader of Cumberland Council, Cllr Mark Fryer, said: “The Town Deal represents a significant programme of regeneration for Cleator Moor and its communities and it is great to see it moving forward.

“Each project has the potential to transform the lives of local people, whether that’s through better access to sports facilities, new jobs or training opportunities.

“Please do come along to the drop-in event to find out more.”

Towns Fund – Town Deals

On 27 July 2019, the Prime Minister announced that the Towns Fund would support an initial 101 places across England to develop Town Deal proposals, to drive economic regeneration and deliver long-term economic and productivity growth. See further details of the announcement.

A Town Deal is an agreement in principle between government, the Lead Council and the Town Deal Board. It will set out a vision and strategy for the town, and what each party agrees to do to achieve this vision.

Each of the 101 towns selected to work towards a Town Deal also received accelerated funding last year for investment in capital projects that would have an immediate impact and help places “build back better” in the wake of Covid-19.
