Connected Town

Cleator Moor Town Deal

Encouraging more walking and cycling in and around Cleator Moor, improving accessibility and also enhancing gateways into the town are all on the agenda as part of the Connected Town project.

The project will better connect Cleator Moor to employment, education and health provision beyond the town, while also enhancing the perception and character of the town as an innovative and dynamic place to live, work and visit.

As part of the proposals, seven locations across the town have been highlighted as areas where money could be invested in new or improved paths for cyclists and pedestrians.

They are: Mill Hill to the Leconfield Industrial Estate; Leconfield Industrial Estate to Birks Road; Town Square frontage; Aldby Grove to the east of Wath Brow Junction; Market Square to Cleator Mills link; the Leconfield to Activity Centre link and the Leconfield Industrial Estate links.

The Connected Town project also includes proposed improvements to three road junctions; Wath Brow the Bowthorn Road/Whitehaven Road junction and the Leconfield junction.

And there are plans to enhance gateways into Cleator Moor – the main entry points by road – to provide a positive first experience for people travelling into the town.

More than 3.5km of walking and cycling routes will be enhanced as part of the project.

It is anticipated that 55 temporary jobs will be created when work commences on Connected Town.

The environmental benefits of not travelling by car will be promoted as part of this project, once the enhancements it will bring to the town and wider area are realised.

Better connection between residential and commercial zones forms part of the plan, as does work to link areas of the wider town including those that make up the other Town Deal projects – for example, the Enterprising Town development on the Leconfield Industrial Estate

Connected Town will also seek to find ways to capitalise on Cleator Moor’s unique location, just a stone’s throw away from both the Cumbria coast and the Lake District National Park, by enhancing transport links.
